Are wasp nests a problem?
If you find a golf ball size nest in the spring, wait and watch it for 10 or so minutes and see if anything returns to the nest, if you see any sign of wasps entering and leaving then it’s one of this years.
If during spring you come across a large wasp nest with no wasps about then it is most likely an old nest from a previous year. These old wasp nests are very rarely reoccupied, though on occasion Queen wasps use them to over winter in.
Often you will find wasps build in the vicinity of these old nests, probably because the site offers suitable protection and is within a good food catchment area.
As the nests grow over the spring and early summer months, there will be more wasps emerging and by mid June most nests will have wasps walking over the outsides of them carrying out various tasks including repairing and expanding the nest.
Old nests usually have an old and tatty look about them where as newly built nest look brighter and fresher
Its very difficult to gauge the age of a nest by its size, or to know what size of nest to expect by its age. Wasp nests grow at very different rates, some nests being in a far more advanced developmental stage than others at the same time of year.
Wasp nests can be found in various locations, just looking at the various pictures found across the internet is testament to this. These locations from the pest controllers point of view can vary from easy to difficult access. Nests that have easy access are generally destroyed using an insecticide that is puffed into and around the entrance. For the more difficult visible nests we use compressed air to blow the insecticide up a tube and thru an outlet either directly into the nest by spiking it or thru the entrance if its possible. For nests that aren’t visible we will puff or blow insecticide with compressed air into the access point. The wasps will then carry this insecticide powder into their nest. Generally the nest is located very close by as they like to build the nest within a source of daylight.
Wasps can find their way thru air bricks in certain circumstances, to prevent this we offer various solutions to proof these access points.
Common wasps will also take advantage of underground spaces, such as old rabbit burrows and mouse or vole tunnels, under walls, patios, just about anywhere that they can fit into and it is dry with enough space for them to build a nest.
The wasps found in roof spaces, sheds, behind fascia boards and air bricks are usually the Common wasp, those that are found building their nests in trees, bushes and hedgerows are most commonly the German wasp.
